It is used for a near future, when we know that it is going to happen.
They are the things that we could write on a diary, as meeting friends, arrangements, exams, a travel, etc.
They usually have a date, and sometimes a time
e.g. I am having an exam tomorrow at 10:00
e.g. I am flying to Madrid on 3rd June
